What is body doubling?
Body doubling is a focus technique where you do a task in the presence of another person who is also working. The other person, your body double, does not help with the task or watch over you. Simply having them there makes it easier to get going and keep going.
The idea grew out of the ADHD coaching world, where people noticed that tasks which felt impossible alone became doable with someone else in the room. It can be a friend at the kitchen table, a classmate at the library, or a group of strangers on a video call. That last one is virtual body doubling, and it is what ShareWell sessions are built for.
People body double for all kinds of things:
- Work projects, emails, and admin
- Studying, homework, and writing
- Cleaning, laundry, and dishes
- Bills, forms, and paperwork
- Creative projects and hobbies
- Daily routines and self-care
Why body doubling works
Research on body doubling is still young, but the people who use it describe the same few effects again and again.
Accountability without pressure
Nobody is checking your work. Just knowing someone else is there, working too, makes it easier to stay with the task instead of drifting off.
Starting gets easier
The hardest part is often the first five minutes. A session with a start time and a room full of people gives you a clear moment to begin.
An anchor for your attention
Another person in view acts as a quiet reminder of what you sat down to do, so it is easier to notice when you wander and come back.
Less alone with the hard stuff
Paperwork, emails, and chores feel heavier in isolation. Doing them next to people who get it takes some of the shame and dread out of it.
Body doubling and ADHD
ADHD often shows up less as “can’t focus” and more as “can’t start.” Executive function challenges make it hard to begin a task, estimate how long it will take, and stick with it once the novelty wears off. Body doubling gives your brain some of the outside structure it is looking for: a set start time, other people, and a gentle sense that someone is with you.
That is why so many people with ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, or burnout lean on it, especially for the boring, overwhelming, or emotionally loaded tasks that tend to pile up. It pairs well with other strategies like timers and breaking tasks into small steps, and with support for time blindness.
