Loving someone through addiction, and finding your own way back

Across the river valley from Northern Kentucky up to Dayton, addiction has touched families of every kind, and the people who carry it hardest are often the ones who never used anything themselves: the mother who keeps a phone by the bed, the brother raising a niece, the spouse who has learned to read a face at the door. People in early recovery face their own version of the same silence, rebuilding a life in a town where everyone remembers the old one. The region has a strong recovery community, but a meeting across town is not always possible with kids, a job and no one to cover for you, and the drive over the bridge in winter can be reason enough to stay home.

Why it helps

How peer support helps near Cincinnati

A peer group gives the family member a place to speak without protecting anyone, and gives the person in recovery an hour that is about the life they are building rather than the one they left. You join from home, which means you can be there even on the nights you cannot leave the house.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to live in Cincinnati to join?

No. Groups are online, so you can join from Covington, Florence, Mason, West Chester, Hamilton, Dayton, Northern Kentucky or anywhere else in the region.

Is this a twelve-step program?

No. ShareWell groups are peer support rooms with a trained host, not a program with steps. Many members attend twelve-step meetings as well and use the group for the parts those meetings do not cover.

Can I join a group about addiction if I am the family member, not the one using?

Yes. Addiction groups welcome family members, and the caregiving and grief groups are also a good fit for the weight you are carrying.

Do I have to talk about my situation in detail?

No. You decide what to share and when. Some members listen for a few weeks before they say anything, and that is fine.
