Where asking for help still feels like weakness

Birmingham is a hospital city and a proud one, where many people work at the medical center, the steel and construction trades or the banks downtown and go home to the suburbs over the mountain. People are warm and quick to help a neighbor, and far slower to say they need help themselves, because the culture prizes being steady, faithful and self-reliant. Men in particular are often raised to keep their worries private, and women are expected to carry the family and the church and the office without complaint. A person can go to a service on Sunday, work all week and tend to everyone else and never once say out loud that they are not okay. When they finally look for help, the idea of walking into a room of people they might know can be enough to stop them.

Why it helps

How peer support helps near Birmingham

A peer group lets you ask for help without feeling that you have given something up, because everyone in the room is doing the same thing. You join from home in Hoover or Homewood, nobody from church or work is there, and the strength it takes to show up is the kind the group respects.

Inside the room

What members near Birmingham talk about

  • Depression and anxiety you have never told anyone about

  • Drinking or pills that started as a way to cope
  • Grief that you went straight back to work after
Good fit for

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to live in Birmingham to join?

No. Groups are online, so you can join from Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Homewood, Bessemer, Trussville, Tuscaloosa or anywhere else in central Alabama.

Are there groups for men?

Yes. ShareWell has groups for men, and every other group welcomes men too. Many male members say the hardest part was the first click.

Does joining a group mean something is wrong with me?

No. It means you are dealing with something hard and decided not to do it alone. Members include pastors, nurses, coaches and plenty of people who thought they would never need a group.

Will anyone from my church or workplace be in the group?

Almost certainly not. Groups draw members from across the country, and you can use a first name and keep your camera off.
