Long winters and a city that keeps changing

Winter in Greater Boston means leaving work in the dark for months and storms that keep people indoors for days at a time. It is also a place where people keep arriving and leaving, because students graduate, research grants end, labs cut teams and leases turn over every September. Rent pushes many younger residents to wonder how long they can stay, and the friends you made last year may already have moved. Starting over socially again and again takes energy that the dark season does not leave you with.

Why it helps

How peer support helps near Boston

An evening group at home gives the dark months something steady to look forward to, with people who keep showing up even when your local circle keeps changing. You can join from the couch during a storm, and the group is still there after a move, a layoff or the end of a program.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to live in Boston to join?

No. Groups meet online, so you can join from Cambridge, Somerville, Quincy, Newton, Brookline, Worcester, Lowell, the North Shore, the South Shore, MetroWest or anywhere else.

Can a support group help with the winter blues?

Many members say regular contact with people who understand makes the dark months easier to get through. A peer group is not treatment, so if your low mood is severe or does not lift, please also talk with a doctor or a licensed clinician.

I am a student in Boston. Can I join?

Yes. Adult students join for stress, loneliness, grief and many other reasons, and because the group is online it stays with you when you move for the summer or after graduation.

What happens if there is a storm on the day of my group?

Nothing changes, because the group meets by video. As long as you have power and an internet connection you can join from home.
