Moving back home to help out

Western New York calls its people back. They leave for Boston, New York City or North Carolina in their twenties, and a decade later a parent needs them, a house opens up or they want their kids to know their grandparents, so they return. What they find is a hometown where the friends have moved on or never left, where the parent they came to help does not want to be helped, and where the version of themselves that lived elsewhere does not quite fit at the kitchen table. The winters are long and the snow is real, and caring for an aging parent through one of them, while working remotely for a company in another city, can shrink life down to a few rooms. The City of Good Neighbors is good at casseroles and less good at talking about how the caregiver is doing.

Why it helps

How peer support helps near Buffalo

A peer group gives the person who came home a room that is about them for an hour. You join from the house you grew up in or the one you bought around the corner from it, with people who understand the strange mix of duty, love and loss that comes with moving back.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to live in Buffalo to join?

No. Groups are online, so you can join from Amherst, Cheektowaga, Tonawanda, Niagara Falls, West Seneca, Orchard Park, Lockport or anywhere else in Western New York.

Can I join while my parent is in the next room?

Yes. Headphones and a closed door are enough. Many caregivers join during a nap or after the evening routine.

Is there a group for people who moved back to their hometown?

There is no group with that exact name, but the caregiving, loneliness and grief groups are where returnees usually land, and the experience is common in all three.

Can I join when the snow keeps me in?

Yes. The group happens whatever the weather, which is one reason members in Western New York prefer online groups in winter.
