When the kids built their lives somewhere else

Connecticut is a state of small towns where families put down roots, and then the next generation leaves for a city with more going on. The result is a lot of parents in their fifties, sixties and seventies rattling around a house that was sized for a family, with a spare bedroom that is only full at Thanksgiving. The weekly phone call is not the same as having them close. Some of those parents are also looking after their own mother or father in the same town, and the ones in Fairfield County spent decades on a train to Manhattan and are now home all day with a spouse they barely saw during the working years. Everyone is pleasant about it, and nobody says out loud that it hurts.

Why it helps

How peer support helps near Hartford

A peer group puts you in a room with other people whose children are three states away and whose evenings got quiet at the same time yours did. You join from the kitchen table in Glastonbury or a condo in Stamford, and the group is one standing appointment in a week that used to be full of other people.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to live in Hartford to join?

No. Groups are online, so you can join from West Hartford, New Britain, Manchester, Middletown, New Haven, Waterbury, Bridgeport, Stamford or anywhere else in Connecticut.

I live in Fairfield County. Is this page for me too?

Yes. Stamford, Bridgeport and the towns between them are included here, and because every group is online it makes no difference which end of the state you are in.

Are there groups for people my age?

The aging groups are built for members in their fifties and beyond, and the grief and loneliness groups have plenty of members at the same stage of life.

My spouse and I would both like to come. Can we?

You can each join the same group or different ones. Some couples prefer separate groups so that each person has a place to speak freely.
