ALS changes what your body can do while you remain aware of every change. ShareWell has free online support groups for people living with serious illness, where patients, caregivers and loved ones can join from home and take part by speaking, typing or simply being there.

Topic context

Understanding als

ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, formerly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects the nerve cells that control voluntary movement. Over time people lose the ability to control movements such as walking, talking and chewing, while most remain able to think, remember and understand.

Why it helps

How peer support helps with als

Peer support can help with ALS because the whole family is affected, and each person often hides how overwhelmed they feel from the others. A group gives each of you a place of your own to talk.

Inside the room

What als groups often cover

  • Being aware of changes as they happen
  • Losing speech and finding other ways to communicate
  • A partner becoming a caregiver
  • Feeling overwhelmed and alone as a family

ShareWell groups are peer support and do not give medical advice, so please keep working with your care team on anything about diagnosis or treatment. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Good fit for

Who these groups may help

  • People living with ALS, including the newly diagnosed
  • Spouses, partners and family caregivers
  • People grieving someone they cared for

Frequently asked questions

Is there an online support group for ALS?

ShareWell has no ALS-specific group yet. The groups shown on this page bring together people facing serious illness of all kinds, with quieter sessions such as meditation beside them, and people living with ALS and their families are welcome.

Can I take part if I cannot speak clearly?

Yes. You can type in the chat, use your own communication device, or listen.

Is there support for ALS caregivers?

Yes. Caregivers can join these groups, and ShareWell has caregiving and grief groups as well.

Where can I find medical information about ALS?

The ALS Association (als.org) is the national patient organization, and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (ninds.nih.gov) has a plain-language guide.
