Understanding bladder cancer

Bladder cancer treatment often starts with a procedure to remove tumors from the bladder lining, and some people have all or part of the bladder removed. After that, urine leaves the body a new way, through a urostomy pouch or a new bladder made from intestine, and regular bladder exams become part of life.

Why it helps

How peer support helps with bladder cancer

Peer support can help with bladder cancer because a urostomy, leaks and changes in intimacy are subjects most people cannot raise with friends. A peer-led group is a safe space to ask the questions you would not ask anywhere else.

Inside the room

What bladder cancer groups often cover

  • Getting used to a urostomy pouch or a neobladder
  • Worry about leaks when you are out or with a partner
  • Nerves before each bladder exam
  • Feeling at ease in your body again

ShareWell groups are peer support and do not give medical advice, so please keep working with your care team on anything about diagnosis or treatment. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Good fit for

Who these groups may help

  • People with bladder cancer, from newly diagnosed to long-term survivors
  • People who have had their bladder removed

Frequently asked questions

Is there an online support group for bladder cancer?

ShareWell does not have a group for bladder cancer only. The sessions here are for people with serious illness of any kind, with some calm sessions such as breathwork mixed in, and bladder cancer patients and survivors are welcome.

Can I talk about living with a urostomy?

Yes. Members speak openly about ostomies and body changes, and you share only what you want to.

Is there support for caregivers of someone with bladder cancer?

Yes. Caregivers can join these groups with their own account, and ShareWell has caregiving groups too.

Where can I find medical information about bladder cancer?

The Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (bcan.org) has patient information and a support line at 833-275-4222.
