Understanding copd

COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, makes breathing harder over time. Breathlessness limits walking, stairs and outings, some people use oxygen, and the fear of not getting enough air can cause panic.

Why it helps

How peer support helps with copd

Peer support can help with COPD because breathlessness and anxiety often come together, and staying home alone can make it harder to cope. A group brings people to you.

Inside the room

What copd groups often cover

  • Panic when you cannot catch your breath
  • Using oxygen around other people
  • A world that gets smaller as walking gets harder
  • Guilt or blame about smoking, including when you never smoked

ShareWell groups are peer support and do not give medical advice, so please keep working with your care team on anything about diagnosis or treatment. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Good fit for

Who these groups may help

  • People living with COPD, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis
  • People who use oxygen at home
  • Anyone who rarely gets out of the house

Frequently asked questions

Is there a COPD support group?

Not under that name. People with COPD can join the groups on this page, which are for anyone with a long-term illness, and may like the slower sessions such as mindfulness.

Should I do the breathwork sessions?

The breathwork sessions here are general relaxation sessions led by peers. They are not respiratory care and are not designed for lung conditions. Breathing techniques made for COPD are best learned from your doctor or respiratory therapist, so please ask them before you try any breathing exercise. You are welcome to sit in and listen without doing the exercises.

Talking makes me breathless. Can I take part?

Yes. You can listen, take breaks or type in the chat.

Where can I find medical information about COPD?

The COPD Foundation (copdfoundation.org) has a helpline at 1-866-731-2673, and the American Lung Association Lung HelpLine is 1-800-586-4872.
