When your parent moves in

Families here stay close, often in the same house: a grandmother in the back bedroom, teenagers in the front, and a daughter or son in the middle who works a full shift, drives to appointments at the hospitals on Lomas, manages the medications and translates the paperwork. In New Mexico the question of who will care for Mom was settled long ago, usually in favor of whichever child lives closest, and the brothers and sisters in Denver or Phoenix send love and not much else. The house is loud and there is never a room to be alone in. The long drives across the metro, the winter mornings and the summer monsoon afternoons all happen with someone else's needs in the passenger seat, and the caregiver is the last person anybody checks on.

Why it helps

How peer support helps near Albuquerque

A peer group is one hour where someone finally asks how you are doing instead of how your mother is. You join from a parked car in the driveway or a bedroom with the door shut, and the other members are managing the same tangle of love, duty and exhaustion.

Inside the room

What members near Albuquerque talk about

  • Caring for a parent who lives under your roof
  • Siblings who are far away and do not share the load
  • No privacy and no time in a full house
  • Resentment and guilt that take turns
Good fit for

Who these groups may help

  • Adult children caring for a parent or grandparent at home
  • Parents raising kids in the same house as their own parents
  • The sibling who lives closest and got the job by default
  • Anyone who feels selfish for wanting an hour to themselves

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to live in Albuquerque to join?

No. Groups are online, so you can join from Rio Rancho, Santa Fe, Los Lunas, Bernalillo, Corrales, the East Mountains or anywhere else in New Mexico.

There is no quiet room in my house. How do other caregivers manage?

Many caregivers join from a parked car, a porch or a bedroom with headphones on. You can also keep your camera off and type in the chat if talking is not possible.

Is there anything for the parent I care for?

The aging and chronic illness groups welcome older adults directly, and some families have one member in a caregiving group and another in an aging group.

Will the group tell me what to do about my mother's care?

No. Members share what has worked for them, but the group is peer support, not medical or legal advice.
