Chronic Disease and Chronic Condition Support Community
Kidney cancer often comes as a surprise, and many people are in surgery before the news has sunk in. ShareWell has free online support groups for people living with serious illness, where patients, family members and caregivers remind each other that they are not alone.
Live groups available daily.
Understanding kidney cancer
Kidney cancer, also called renal cell carcinoma, is commonly treated with surgery to remove all or part of a kidney. Afterward people return for regular exams, lab tests or imaging, and some continue with ongoing drug treatment to keep the cancer in check.
How peer support helps with kidney cancer
Peer support can help with kidney cancer because grief for the life you had before, and guilt about being a burden, are hard to admit at home. Connecting with people who live with cancer makes those feelings easier to say.
What kidney cancer groups often cover
- Grief for your health and life before diagnosis
- Living with one kidney after surgery
- Trouble relaxing or sleeping before follow-up visits
- Feeling lonely even with people around you
ShareWell groups are peer support and do not give medical advice, so please keep working with your care team on anything about diagnosis or treatment. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Who these groups may help
- People newly diagnosed, in treatment or recovering from kidney cancer
- People on ongoing treatment for advanced kidney cancer
- Family members and caregivers
