Understanding leukemia

Leukemia treatment can last a long time and may include hospital stays and periods when a person is told to avoid large crowds and people who are sick, because of the risk of infection.

Why it helps

How peer support helps with leukemia

Peer support can help with leukemia because isolation is often part of the treatment itself. An online group brings other people into your day when visitors and outings are limited.

Inside the room

What leukemia groups often cover

  • Weeks or months away from normal life
  • Staying connected when you cannot see people in person
  • Being the parent of a child in treatment
  • Returning to work or school after treatment

ShareWell groups are peer support and do not give medical advice, so please keep working with your care team on anything about diagnosis or treatment. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Good fit for

Who these groups may help

  • People with acute or chronic leukemia
  • People who are isolating during treatment
  • Parents and caregivers, and anyone recovering after a transplant

Frequently asked questions

Are the groups here only for leukemia?

They are open more widely than that. Without a leukemia group of our own for now, we show groups where people with different long-term illnesses support each other, plus calm sessions such as mindfulness.

Can I join from the hospital?

Yes, if you have a device and an internet connection. Headphones help keep the conversation private.

Is an online group safe while my immune system is low?

Groups meet by video, so there is no physical contact with other members.

Where can I find information about leukemia?

The Leukemia Research Foundation (leukemiarf.org) has information and resources for patients and families.
