Understanding scleroderma

Scleroderma is an autoimmune disease that causes areas of tight, hard skin. The localized form affects the skin, while systemic scleroderma, also called systemic sclerosis, can affect blood vessels and internal organs, and fingers and toes can react painfully to cold or stress.

Why it helps

How peer support helps with scleroderma

Peer support can help with scleroderma because a rare disease brings a feeling of isolation. Being with people who also live with long-term illness makes it less lonely.

What scleroderma groups often cover

  • Feeling alone with a rare disease
  • Changes to the skin of the face and hands

  • Taking in a complex new diagnosis

ShareWell groups are peer support and do not give medical advice, so please keep working with your care team on anything about diagnosis or treatment. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
