Understanding throat cancer

Throat cancer, which doctors group with head and neck cancers such as cancer of the larynx or tonsil, can change how a person speaks, swallows and eats. Some people also live with a changed appearance, a feeding tube for a time, or a new way of speaking, and with the worry that comes with every follow-up visit.

Why it helps

How peer support helps with throat cancer

Peer support can help with throat cancer because so much of the experience is about communication, and being with people who wait patiently while you find your words is a relief. A group gives you company for the long stretch after treatment, when appointments slow down and the changes remain.

Inside the room

What throat cancer groups often cover

  • Changes to your voice and being understood by others
  • Eating, swallowing and meals with family and friends
  • Feeling self-conscious about how you look or sound
  • Worry before scans and follow-up appointments

ShareWell groups are peer support and do not give medical advice, so please keep working with your care team on anything about diagnosis or treatment. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Good fit for

Who these groups may help

  • People in treatment for throat cancer or recovering from it
  • People adjusting to a new way of speaking or eating
  • Anyone who has pulled back from social life since diagnosis

Frequently asked questions

Is there a group only for throat cancer?

Not at the moment. The groups on this page are for people living with any serious or long-term illness, along with gentle sessions such as breathwork, and people with throat cancer are welcome in all of them.

Can I join if speaking is hard for me?

Yes. You can take part by typing in the chat, and you are welcome to listen for as long as you like.

Can my partner or caregiver join too?

Yes. Partners and caregivers can create their own free account, and ShareWell also has caregiving groups for the people doing the supporting.

Where can I find medical information about throat cancer?

The Head and Neck Cancer Alliance (headandneck.org) and SPOHNC, Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer (spohnc.org), both serve patients and caregivers.
