Living with asthma means staying alert to triggers that other people never notice. ShareWell has free online support groups for people living with long-term illness, where adults with asthma can talk about the fear and frustration that come with it.

Topic context

Understanding asthma

Asthma is a long-term condition in which the airways in the lungs become inflamed and narrowed at times. It can mean wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and a tight chest, often worse at night, and many people plan their days, sleep and work around avoiding the things that trigger it.

Why it helps

How peer support helps with asthma

Peer support can help with asthma because fear of the next attack, and the limits it puts on work and family life, are rarely spoken about. A group gives you people who understand why you are careful.

What asthma groups often cover

  • Fear and panic tied to breathing
  • Watching for triggers at home and at work
  • Broken sleep and tiredness the next day
  • Missed work, school or plans

ShareWell groups are peer support and do not give medical advice, so please keep working with your care team on anything about diagnosis or treatment. If you are in crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an online support group for asthma?

Not one for asthma alone. The groups here are open to people living with any long-term illness, shown next to calm sessions such as mindfulness, and adults with asthma are welcome.

Should I try the breathwork sessions if I have asthma?

Those are general relaxation sessions led by peers and are not designed for asthma. Please check with your doctor before trying any breathing exercise, and feel free to listen without taking part.

What if I have symptoms during a session?

Follow your own asthma action plan and call 911 if it is an emergency. Hosts and members are peers and cannot send help.

Where can I find medical information about asthma?

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (aafa.org) can be reached at 1-800-727-8462.
