Starting a second career in a city that had to start over too

A generation of Rochester families expected to spend a whole working life at one employer, and then the big companies shrank and the plan went with them. Today the work is in the hospitals, the universities and smaller shops, and a lot of people in their forties and fifties are back in a classroom at MCC or RIT, taking an entry-level job after twenty years of seniority, or training for health care because that is where the openings are. It is humbling to be the oldest person in the orientation and to explain the gap on a resume. Add a long gray winter, a mortgage that does not pause for retraining and a spouse who is tired of hearing about it, and the stress has nowhere to go.

Why it helps

How peer support helps near Rochester

A peer group gives you people who are also learning a new field late, managing money through the transition and trying to keep their confidence up. It meets online in the evening, after class or a shift, so it fits around a schedule that has already changed too many times this year.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to live in Rochester to join?

No. Groups are online, so you can join from Greece, Irondequoit, Henrietta, Brighton, Pittsford, Webster, Penfield, Canandaigua or anywhere else in the Finger Lakes region.

I have class in the evening. Are there daytime groups?

Yes. Groups run throughout the day in Eastern time, including mornings and early afternoons, so you can find one that fits around school or shift work.

Will the group help me find a job?

Not directly. It is a place to talk about the stress of the change with people living through the same thing, which many members say makes the practical steps easier.

Is this only for people who were laid off?

No. Members include people who left a career by choice, who are returning to work after raising children, and who are simply tired of what they do.
